love today, no matter what

Some ten years ago a cute college co-ed got her passport renewed. Two weeks ago it expired. The cute 21 yr old evolved into a well-travelled, married 31 yr old and it seems more important than ever to look cute for this picture that I'll have for the next ten years.

Because afterall, I'll never be younger than I am today and I'll betcha the 41 yr old will look back on this photo and say, "damn, why wasn't that hot mama happier with her looks? Just look at me now."

When I worked in portrait studio many people would come in for their passport photo. We used to make fun of how particular the women were about their photograph. How critical it was to them. We'd laugh as they would pay $15 bucks to take the picture over and over until they were satisfied. It's not so funny anymore. I know how they feel. I can barely muster the strength to walk over to the photo booth because I fear the portrait will disappoint. It was easy to be cute in my twenties. My thirties seem to be a different story. I look in the mirror and see gray hair and wrinkles, and I swear I'm not looking at my darling and adorable husband. It looks damn sexy on him.

In other news, I've completed my first week of term III at New England School of Photography. My classes are Business Practices, Color Communications and Visual Perceptions. Classes with freedom to shoot what I want to shoot. So what is it that I want to shoot and how? I think I want to explore digital. First assignments: write dream goal, life goal and photo dreams; photograph color slides in 4 different kinds of artificial light; and the last: take a human, a man-made object and a natural object and make them all convey the same feeling, tone.

Lots to think about. My head spins with ideas. But for this afternoon, I just gotta babystep my way over to the Passport Photo lab and give it my best shot. For I will NEVER look younger than I do today. In America, younger is better.

Just one more reason to love today no matter where you may find yourself in the whole wide world.

hope floats

Baby, I said, BABY! It's cold outside! I just don't understand what happened. Yesterday morning as the rain was melting all the dirty ol' snow piles lurkin' on curbs and in the streets and in the parks, I felt myself gettin' happy. Stand back, my friends, spring is on its merry way! Then WHAM BAM somewhere between Jean Therapy and TeaLuxe bits o' hail blew sideways in my face. Walking backwards to Texas must surely be the answer. Good thing there's a ticket in my back pocket. Leaving on Monday with one brief stop on the way to God's Country. Seven glorious days touring four great cities and towns.

But first there are final projects to present for photo school large and small formats. I'm excited about my work despite the negative cats in my class that try to bring us all down.

Even Sandra Bullock knows hope floats.
