My Favorite FauxToe of the Day. Posted by Picasa

Ah, the peace of mind that comes with an address.

fire up, buttercup

We got the house! We're so excited. All is going to work out just fine and dandy.

To do:
1. Mover's parking permits
2. Clean out locker at NESOP
3. Coordinate floor installation
4. FauxToes: 2 sittings & 2 orders to process
5. File Change of Address forms
6. Donate heavy coats and outerwear
7. Scoop all the rest of it into boxes
8. Completely inhale the harbor views/smells before heading to landlocked country.

We're still waiting a confirmation on this one, but this could be it... a beautiful new home near Austin with a community playground just on the other side of the backyard fence... can we say, kid magnet? can we also say, FauxToes haven? let's all cross our fingers and keep good thoughts. i'm getting very, very excited.

What are the odds?

fire up, buttercup

This morning, I took the dogs out for a quick pee break in our favorite peeing spot, the Training Field. What are the odds that a teeny tiny bee would fly between my foot and my flip-flop AND sting me right in the middle of my foot? I mean the odds have to be quite slim. I've lived 31.5 years and never been stung by a bee. But now I can't say that any more.

I'm taking it as a sign of good fortune. Stay tuned...

Uncomfortable, But will I miss it?

fire up, buttercup

I sit here at my computer and feel little Rosa Jane kicking and moving around. It's only slightly uncomfortable. It makes me smile to feel her so close to me. I can't imagine what it will feel like once she's outta here. I wonder if I will feel empty or barren or just plain weird to have my body back, not that you can ever control what goes on internally. I imagine myself wearing RJ in a sling just to keep that feeling of her body moving against mine. But then again, there's another part of me that has never liked carrying anything of significant weight... so why would i want to lug a extra body unnecessarily? I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all pans out. If only my dogs were a little more cooperative and less shedd-y, I could try out the sling and see how it feels to carry some extra weight...

Don keeps calling me with cheerful speak of Texas. It sounds like he really likes it, despite the heat. What an exciting adventure!

Light as a Feather

Don flew like a bird this morning on his way to Houston for the night and Austin tomorrow. I miss him already, but I'm also so hopeful about this trek.

I'm officially leaving Bean Town on August 19th. Pinch me, is any of this real?!

Move this, move that, THAT stays.

fire up, buttercup

On and on we go through every inch of this house touching every file, every piece of paper and every item asking ourselves, "do we really NEED this?" And tossing what we don't need. What a feeling!

We had another good visit with our OB on Monday. She said everything was going great and was very sympathetic about our move. She encouraged me to fly and said I'd be much better off on a plane than in the car. I'm thankful for that and I'm also thankful that my mom is going to come back up to help pack and be with me on the plane.

I had a photo session with cutie Sophia today. She's 19mos and talking up a storm. I couldn't believe how much she had changed since I last saw her at 6 months when she was barely sitting.

Congratulations to my Nashville friends, Tom and Katherine, on the birth of healthy, precious Lola Rose (July 29th)!

Yesterday we made our first major baby purchase. We found a great mom-and-pop shop full of the cutest baby stuff in Arlington and we really wanted to do business with them before we left town. So now, little Rosa Jane, we have a car seat and a stroller for you. You could say our mode of thought is "baby-on-the-go." Maybe once we get to Austin, we'll start talking nursery. Stay tuned...  Posted by Picasa

PAIN -- Purposeful Anticipated Intermittent Natural/Normal

fire up, buttercup

On Tuesday the 26th, we went to our second childbirth class at MGH. They sure did their best to scare us into buying into the PAIN of labor and delivery. There was a lot of nervous laughter filling the room and when they showed us this natural birth video, there wasn't a comfortable face in the whole room. We got to sample the discomfort when the leader asked the women to grab some ice cubes and hold them in the palm of our hands tightly as "the contraction" wore on. Our partners tried various methods to comfort us. I just don't know if anything is going to work. I'd like to choose the option where I'm completely comatose and just wake up to a beautiful baby girl with all her fingers and toes. "Y'all go on ahead, I'll catch up later."

The other thought in the back of my head is this: maybe, just MAYBE, I'm in the small percentage of women who never feel labor and then look down only to say, "Oops, Rosa Jane, when did you get here?"

The other possibility of course is that we go into labor during our what would be a normal 31+ hour car ride to Austin. On all the web sites, they recommend pregnant women stop every hour to walk around... Good Lord... I just don't think I could handle making the journey twice as long for everyone! It seems ridiculous. But oh, what a story to tell! That is, it would be funny as long as she wasn't born in Arkansas. I think I'd have to have Don drive like hell to get us to God's country in just the nick of time. Texarkana, the Texas side, would do just fine. ;-)

We gave the moving company the date of Aug. 24 to come get our stuff. It's been a stressful couple of days as we tried to wrap our heads around everything that that means. Especially when we don't have an address at the other end, but we spent yesterday purging and I think maybe everything is going to be okay after all.

Deep Inhale, think "I AM..." exhale "...relaxed."
Deep inhale, think "I AM..." exhale "...strong."
Deep inhale, think "I CAN..." exhale "...do this."

Which is worse? The pain of childbirth or a 60 hour drive to Texas during the heat of summer?

Or should I say, which would YOU rather?? The pain of childbirth or a 60 hour drive to Texas during the heat of summer?

Too bad I'll have to suffer both. Woe is me!

Reply Hazy Try Again Later

fire up, buttercup

Things are really starting to take shape now! We've made a long overdue improvement to our home on Friday (got the masterbath toilet working) and come tomorrow we've got an appointment with a moving company to give us a quote on what it will take to get us and our stuff to Austin come the last full week of August. Don will visit A-town in the next 10 days and hopefully make some strong connections with some recruiters and maybe even some hiring companies and will find us a dandy place to hang our hats for the next year. As for me? You'll find me in the depths of our closets... cleaning out things that we'll never use again... can you say bye-bye artic weather coats? YEEHAW!! It's pretty exciting and maybe just a little overwhelming but we're babystepping and doing the work.

Robyna is definitely in on our move with us! We'll drive to DC to pick her up and take that funny girl with us on our big adventure. How GRAND!!!

Yesterday and today the weather has been and is a gorgeous 75 degrees. We walked all around downtown and went to see Wedding Crashers and laughed our heads off. It's a very funny movie.

During our walk, my fingertips swelled up from the pregnancy and I thought they were going to explode.

Last Thursday, we had an appointment with a midwife since our doctor was out of town. It went really well, and she was so sweet and Mary Poppins-like. All signs point to a normal, healthy pregnancy and that's so very exciting... Just 8 weeks left!

$@?! Floats

fire up, buttercup

Yesterday on our afternoon walk with the dogs, we ran into our friend, a Townie. She's lived in "concrete city" (as she referred to it) for 58 years and finally sold her place to a multi-millionaire and bought a small place in Revere on the beach. She's leaving next month. As we parted ways, she said "$@?! floats" and I think she was referring to all her worries and how things will seem better once she's got her harbor view. I tend to agree.

Color Me Done

fire up, buttercup

Well, my days as an official full-time class-takin' New England School of Photography student are over. KDogg and I celebrated with fancy smancy pedicures and manicures -- Melon of Troy, please.

Tom made me go first for presentations. I played the weepy girl and several classmates said, "You almost made me cry!" which my first reaction felt like -- "You almost won the Oscar!" But when I think further about who these 'mates are -- stone cold pure blooded Bostonians -- I guess it's about as high as a compliment as you can get. Right now, I find the images are hard to look at because I feel so emotional about them and they feel very raw and powerful to me.

We had the realtor come last week -- the same day I dyed my hair back to its original roots -- and she recommends we move out, get hardwood floors and then put the house on the market right after Labor Day. Whew, that's a tall order and a lot to think about, but with no more school and nothing to do in the days ahead, why not start throwing stuff out and getting more organized for an adventure that is sure to have us on the edge of our seats?

I like the thought of being in Richland for Labor Day.
Nevermind all the inbetween drama I just skipped over to envision that sweet time with family as a Texan on native soil again.

Texas, My Texas, What Big Teeth You Have!

fire up, buttercup

The big wheels are starting to roll as we talk to a realtor later today. I've been a big emotional mess for the last three days, but I am starting to see the light again and I know everything will be fine. Sometimes though, when you're 7 months pregnant, you'll find it's real fun to get all worked up about being without a nest (temporarily, even) and just trying to wrap my head around all the change that will happen as soon as Rosa Jane starts making her move outside the womb. You should see my belly with all the weird and wacky "shifts" it makes at odd times as I'm clearly not the one in control. Rosa Jane already has my number. Watch out, world! Don't say I didn't warn you!

So at the end of the day, or at the wee hours of the beginning of a new day, like it is now, I've got the love of my life sweetly holding my hand, two precious pups and just these two buckets full of hopes and dreams.

We're hoping that Robyna will get to join us as we all make the epic journey down South. That would really be something if it all works out. It's the stuff good novels are made up of and I don't know why really, but Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove comes to mind...

Would you stop for Blue Eyes?

This evening we went for a walk with the dogs in the Navy Yard, the on-location spot for filming Scorcese's "The Departed." I said, I wonder if we'll spot Jack or Matt. Don said, no, it's probably going to be Leo. So he kept walking and I thought I would, too. But curiosity made me stop just as he came out of his trailor to get in his "gitaway car." Someone shouted, "Leo, how 'bout an autograph?" and Leo looked up... right at me and Hank this time... and raised his hand high over his head in a wave, a motion I could only mimic. Cares and all coolness thrown to the wind. Still, I think he loves me and I know he wondered if I was carrying his baby. I've heard all stars think that when they see a pregnant woman. Posted by Hello

Me and Jack.

fire up, buttercup

Well, well, well, what do you know? I learned something new today and can now start adding pictures to my blog. Thanks to Sally cat for publishing my blog and spurrin' me into action to get on the band wagon. I thought I was anonymous. ;-)

Today Don and I went to the Stone Zoo to see a mess of stinky monkeys, 50 flamingos, one growly leopard and two cougars (Go, Cougs!), two bald eagles, one horned owl and one very prickly porcupine. All in all it was a good hour at the zoo... never mind we spent the most time waiting at the Safari Grill for the most delicious mustard covered hotdog. Oh, and did I forget to mention that we saw two reindeer??? Yeah, that was sweet alright. I wanted to invite them over for dinner to partake in the "light lichen" on our living room walls.

Pregnancy makes me lose my brain. I can spend 30 minutes shopping for just the right thing only to end up picking up the wrong size and style in the last 30 seconds. Of course, the item is non-returnable. Joy of wasted money.

I love starbucks, nevermind what Robyn says.

Rosa Jane feels seriously similar to what it must be like to carry the alien from the movie V. I feel like my entire belly might end up on the floor with her somersaults.

Yesterday, after class and getting a motherload of a photo assignment I've yet to do before Friday, I took the boat home. Ten trailers lined the entire wharf and I wondered to myself if the circus was in town. Just as I was walking past the second trailer on my right, the one and only JACK NICHOLSON walks out with shaggy disarrayed gray hair and wearing a leopard robe like thing with pink satin trim. He's in town working on the new Martin Scorcese film: The Departed. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0407887/

Need I say he looked right at me and we shared a special moment?
Of course we did. That's just how lucky I am.

Color Homework: Dig up and bring to class best color photo ever taken (digital doesn't count). Next write up proposal for final project. Finally take two rolls of film based on write up. Bring developed negs to class to start printing on Friday. Damn, this class moves quickly! I'm thinking of doing more self portraits, since my assignment on that topic didn't turn out too great, I'd really like to master the document of pregnancy. It's all I can think about... that and "excuse me, ma'm, but do you like your stroller?"

Go Bears, beat Bevo.

My Crib & Counting Blessings

fire up, buttercup

These last few days have been smotheringly hot but oh-so-fun with my monkey! We shop and laugh and poke fun and I just don't think anybody at these baby stores is having as much fun as we are. I'm very, very lucky. I've been so impressed by my husband. He's been such a champ and good mate despite a work situation that is less than desirable. These days together have been wonderful. I think it's a really good sign and true blessing to have such a mate beside me. I get so overwhelmed in these stupid baby stores with all these stupid decisions... things that I don't really want to care about, but the price points force me to care. Don makes me laugh. What a gift!

My dad found a medical convention in Beantown and so both M&D will be coming up during the 9th of July. We're going to have our baby shower during that time, too. So we're trying to decide if couples should come or if that would be just too painfully boring for the guys.

Today was pay day for some photo work I did and boy does that feel great!

Little RJ keeps on a-kickin' and I get such a pleasure out of that. I get a little worried when I don't feel her every now and then. All of this is a blessing and I'm very thankful for it all.

The Next Chapter

fire up, buttercup: the next chapter

Sunny and warm finally, but Spring definitely seems to have missed us and Summer is now here. WELCOME!!

I spent the morning with the Koh family -- photographing young Sara and Scotty playing at the playground and around various spots in Beantown. It was lots of fun. The kids were beautiful and smart and giggly and happy. The Kohs are moving back to sunny LA at the end of the month and I'm happy to document a little of their lives here.

In the afternoon, Don and I took a sunny roadtrip north to Saco Maine to celebrate our nieces high school graduation. We got to hang out on their high-ceiling porch and even were able to climb amongst the trees in their tree house. JOY! I do love being high up and it was fun to imagine all the playing that the girls must have shared up there. Call me a sentimental, I really don't care.

I'm starting to really show now and people are asking when I'm due without my saying anything first. I'm relieved... I so don't want to just look fat.

I love being with family and it was fun to see the Rich family in their element. Katie's getting all growed up and soon will be heading off to DC for her next chapter.

I always knew 2005 would be a great year. Every day seems to get better. Don't let worrisome donr get to you or make you think contrary. Things will work out, I just know it.

We had brunch this morning with our friends Holly and Scott. In a little bit I'm headed over to the navy yard for a little bridal shower action for Cathy and then this evening is full of more photography of the Koh's at Harvard. A busy day indeed!

Bittersweet Graduation

fire up, buttercup

Tonight I herded 75 cats into alphabetical order and it was surprisingly fun, despite not knowing a single one of them -- at least by first and last name. The ceremony itself was incredibly poignant and sweet and I was really impressed by NESOP. Oh holy cow, they can pull off something really nice. It made me a little sad that I won't be able to go through all that, but I know as I've always known that NESOP is not the end all be all. Just because these kids have graduated doesn't make them stellar photographers. It doesn't make them successful. That will be proven later. Andrea Modica spoke and I decided I love her work. Check it out at www.andreamodica.com.

I was disappointed in some of the student digital work. You could just tell it was digitally printed. I don't know if that had more to do with the equipment used, or just the handler at the computer -- like maybe they didn't use the right resolution, etc. Hard to say... but it was pretty clearly stuff that was hard to miss on a 30x30 print. I don't want to print anything that's gonna look shoddy.

My kindred spirit, Marty, and sidekick, Adalaide, gave me good info for the summer classes. I've decided just to take the General Color class two days a week -- Tues. and Fridays. I'm relieved not to be in school 4 days a week. Summer is the best time to be in Boston.

Seacia never ceases to be a crack up. She's sure to point out that of course, she will be around next year so she can take whatever classes she wants. She doesn't have the pressure to take both the digital and color at the same time. Clearly she's not pregnant.

Still despite all the info I now have about both classes, I still wanted to get them out of the way before baby. I wanted someone teach it to me instead of having to teach myself. I need to get over that right away. So that's top of my list.

I feel Baby Rosa Jane move a lot now with more force and I just get so excited. I've decided there's no time to worry about stuff. I think that's always been my life's mantra, it just seems it is ever so important now. What good will it do to worry about stuff that hasn't even happened yet, or what might happen to RJ in the 6th grade. It's just ridiculous. She'll be her own person and I'm just so thrilled that I'll get to spend time with her -- a little bit of Don and me -- but totally different. Or maybe not, we'll just have to see how it all turns out.

Texans all jest to one another about how important it is to be NATIVE. Don has overheard some of these conversations and feels like he's the bad guy. I've tried to tell him it's just a joke, but he's sensitive now. I just have this gut feeling it's all going to work out. I know he's stressed about it and I wish that I could do more for him. But he's such a talented, brilliant man and I know he'll find the perfect job. It just takes time for that match to happen. I'm patient and have faith.

Rosa Jane agrees.

LOVE!

You're a GIRL!!

you're a girl!

Whenever we're out about town and I politely ask Don to hold my purse for a sec, he takes it and then I quickly say, "you're a girl! you're a girl!"

And that's just what we're having: a girl!! So far we've dubbed her Rosa Jane, after my maternal grandmother Rosa and my best friend, Heather Jane.

The doctor was very enthusiastic about the health of the baby and her development so far. It was such a relief! And she's sooo cute and beautiful already!

Rosa Jane is expected to arrive on September 21. She's the only one in the world with whom I would share my birthday.

Friends keep telling me that I'm aglow. I feel so very loved by our community. It's an amazing feeling that reminds me much of how happy everyone was for us at our wedding... and now it's happiness times 10. Life is very, very good.

Wait for CHANGE Posted by Hello

Just When You Thought Change Would Never Come

Just When You Thought Change Would Never Come

Well, the word is out. We're having a baby!! We're so freaking excited that we don't really know what to do with ourselves. The news came May 4th, the day before we left for Jamaica for Holly and Scott's wedding. We had an amazing time together, just relaxing in the warm sun and beautiful views and thinking about baby names. Next week we'll find out the due date and sex in a sonogram on Tuesday. I can't hardly wait!!

In the meantime, school has definitely taken a backseat. Finals are approaching for Term III, and it's getting hard to coordinate my model's schedules. I'm just gonna take it as it comes and if my work has to stay as is, it really wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm pretty happy with my cowgirls on the slides. I just wish they weren't slides so that I could get'em printed up nice n' big without paying a fortune.

All this and Austin, Texas is back on the horizon, but all of that is too hard to think about at the time. I'm gonna miss my Office girls. What a life-saver they have been this year. I'm sorta torn about where to have the delivery (possibly sometime in AUGUST!!) -- mom said there was just NO way we should have a yankee baby... but deep down i know no better pictures would exist anywhere unless it was documented by the office ladies. God loves photographers.

To be continued...

Better Together

better together

"Better Together" by Jack Johnson

There's no combination of words
I could put on the back of a postcard
No song I could sing
But I can try for your heart
Our dreams, and they are made out of real things
Like a, shoebox of photographs
With sepiatone loving
Love is the answer,
At least for most of the questions in my heart
Like why are we here? and where do we go?
And how come we're so hard?
It's not always easy and
Sometimes life can be deceiving
I'll tell you one thing its always better when we're together

[Chorus:]
MMM its always better when we're together
Look at the stars when we're together
Its always better when we're together
Yeah, its always better when we're together

And all of these moments
Just might find there way into my dreams tonight
But I know that theyll be gone
When the morning light sings
And brings new things
But tomorrow night you see
That theyll be gone too
Too many things I have to do
But if all of these dreams might find there way
Into my day to day scene
Ill be under the impression
I was somewhere in between
With only two
Just me and you
Not so many things we got to do
Or places we got to be
We'll Sit beneath the mango tree

Its always better when we're together
Somewhere in between together
Its always better when we're together
Yeah, its always better when we're together

MMmmmm MMMmmmm Mmmmmm
I believe in memories
They look so, so pretty when I sleep
Hey now, and when I wake up,
You look so pretty sleeping next to me
But there is not enough time,
And there is no song I could sing
And there is no, combination of words I could say
But I will still tell you one thing
We're Better together.

another gray, cold, damp day weighs heavy on this soul trying to float to the top. I am trying to see the good off on the horizon. i squint, hoping and praying the goal hasn't totally faded to black. how does one cope when feeling like going with the flow is all wrong? i'm recognizing a deep-seated love for all things texas and a wall of resistance built up against the harshness of beantown. compromise. how much is too much? how much is long enough? how does one take responsibility for the spurring us into the next chapter in which we don't know the ending or even the in between? baby steps to glory. baby steps to letting go. baby steps to being okay and feeling worthy to be the reason behind the decision.

i wouldn't change my experience here for the world, i don't have any regrets, i just need more outta life. more than stressful day to day, dirty grime, people throwing up on public transport. i fear my friends don't understand that i don't mean any of this against them. it's important to be next to the one you love, but i get a lump of sadness in my throat when i truly think of having to stay here. i just don't think i can. i want it to end soon. it seems like the perfect break. and i feel spoiled, but honestly, wasn't it part of the deal? part of the negotiations? a good job and we stay ... i don't know how i thought the job would end, i don't think i ever thought about it. i thought at some point we'd just have to get a trade in, but it seems the chips have been dealt and we have 6500 feelers out there... looking mainly in boston and i just want to mourn the loss of my dream and hope it isn't really dead.

hello, money tree?

hello, money tree

today I spent all day looking for that misplaced money tree. i thought it might be under the bed, so i took out everything just to make sure. it wasn't there. if you see it, know that it is MINE and i want it back. please return asap.

also, I am looking for that promised sun-lamp. Spring is being rather soggy around here and I'm ready for those full-fledged 70 degree days. don't make me wait until July.

depressed at the thought of being in boston forever. it's hard to breathe with an outlook such as that.

under pressure

I'm feeling lots of pressure, per usual, come week 6 at NESOP. It's time to get serious about final projects and just what will be my subjects. I feel like it's just gotta be great. Something to believe in and something that will last through the ages. Something to remember. Something that represents this is where I am, right now. I'm not sure any kid should have that kind of pressure, much less a 31 year old. ;-) I jest, but in all seriousness what am I going to do? I've taken lots of pictures at the fair that was visiting Medford -- prior to the gang shooting/chase last week. My teacher was so enthusiastic about them, it left me feeling kind of high. I was pretty pleased with them myself and easily became intoxicated by his hyperboles. So high I don't know where to go from here. Am I finished five weeks before the assignment is due?? That seemed too easy. Somehow I feel shortchanged... shouldn't I feel pushed to go further...but what exactly is next?

Meanwhile, my girls, Z and KDogg, were super good sports and went with me to the beach yesterday so I could photograph them for color class. The idea was orangey, sun-drenched warm feeling pictures. What developed are comical and cartoony because the color is so saturated and as Pam, the teacher said, seem to state "death by flowers." WHAT?! It's a challenge.

Back on the ranch, last week, Don was informed that he was no longer needed at his job for which he has bled true blue and lime green for the last six years. We got a sneak preview of this dark day back in December, but nobody thought it would really come. So alas, the day arrives Friday, the 29th. What exactly is next?

Today in color class we picked shapes that we like and didn't like and together they made a number. That associated number read like a horoscope. I faked my way through it. Later when I was honest, it read that I was living in a fantasy and preferred to keep it that way as opposed to facing the facts of the day. Scary, Larry.
